Here is part 2 of our series on moving your appliances,
Preparing Your Dishwasher
Clean – In most instances, dishwashers are built-in models and are generally sold or left behind for the next residents. However, if you plan to take your dishwasher along, wipe the exterior and control panel with a moist cloth, and then apply an appliance polish or wax to the cabinet finish. The interior does not ordinarily require cleaning unless there is a build-up of food or soap. Be sure the door remains open for several hours to allow the dishwasher to completely dry out.
Service – Before hiring a moving company for your dishwasher, disconnect and drain the water supply and drain lines. Place the hoses in packing paper or plastic bags, and secured inside the dishwasher. Remove any remaining water from the bottom of the dishwasher.
Preparing Your Washing Machine
Clean – Use a soft cloth and appliance cleaner to wipe down the interior and exterior, and on the inside, clean the lint filter and tub with a soft dry cloth. Be sure leave the lid open to allow remaining moisture to evaporate.
Service – Turn off the water inlet valves and disconnect and drain the supply hoses. Wrap the metal ends of the hoses in a towel and secure them inside the washer. To safely move the washing machine, you need to insert a ‘washer kit’ to avoid movement of the tub during transport. This kit consists of a plastic foam brace or support placed on top of the washer’s agitator. Another method for securing the tub is to tighten the corresponding hardware beneath the washer. Check your owner’s manual for details on how to accomplish this important precaution. Regardless of the time of year the move takes place, all water should be drained from the tub because of climate extremes on route to your new location.
Preparing Your Dryer
Clean – Remove any collected debris from the lint screen. Wipe down the exterior with an appliance cleaner and soft damp cloth. Before cleaning the interior, unplug the dryer or turn off the electrical power to the appliance.
Service – Disconnect the electrical supply to the dryer. Also, disconnect the exhaust conduit from both the dryer and the exhaust vent, and secure it inside the dryer. For a gas dryer, it should be disconnected and the gas line capped off before the move by a qualified appliance specialist.
