Packing a fragile item has to be done right, or else, there would definitely be a high risk of damage. Whether you are packing your china plates, your expensive vase, or your coffee set, it is important that you apply the following tips on packing:
Getting the right box
The first thing to do is to get the right box for whatever you wish to pack. The box should neither be too big nor too compact. Also, it is not practical to store a number of fragile items in the same box. Having an individual box for each fragile item would be much recommended. For example, you can always use a shoebox for an expensive porcelain mug that you have purchased in one of your foreign trips. Very large boxes have to be avoided since there is a tendency for them to be accidentally placed at the bottom when stacking boxes.
Wrap the fragile item
Before the item could be boxed, it is important that you wrap it first with bubble wrap. No matter how strong the urge of popping the bubbles in the wrap, do not do it. Now, bubble wraps come in various sizes. Thus, you have to get the appropriate bubble wrap sizes for your item. Newspaper could also be used to provide cushion for hard to reach parts. For example, a newspaper roll could be inserted through a mug handle to provide cushion for it. An extra layer of newspaper could also be added after the item has already been wrapped with bubble wrap.
Make use of foam peanuts
Your item is ready for boxing. But before you do that you would have to fill the bottom of the box with foam peanuts. Some people use crumpled newspaper as an alternative since these things are more accessible than foam nuts. But crumpled newspapers do not really offer the same benefits that foam peanuts do. The latter could provide cushion for all the sides of the box. Just make sure you use ones that are still in good condition. Once you are done filling the bottom of the box, place the wrapped item and then cover the rest of the box with more foam peanuts.
Use a lot of tape
You are now ready to seal your box. Make sure you use a lot of tape. Seal all the open edges of the box. If you think that two or three layers of tape are not enough, then consider adding more. Make sure you use high quality packing tape. This is because there are a lot of cheap tapes out there which do not stick for a very long time. It is better to take pains in unwrapping a heavily taped box rather than have your fragile item damaged because of lack of tape.
