Moving is strenuous work. It is harder than most service industry jobs because of the element of carrying heavy household items and furniture from one house to another, not counting the drive in between. Long-distance moving is even more involved because it can take more than one day to accomplish the task. With this in mind, be careful to appreciate the job that the moving company staff do and tip them in kind or cash. There are no hard and fast rules about how to do it, but here are some pointers from Montreal moving companies:
Tipping is Not Obligatory
Montreal moving company employees don’t expect to be tipped after a job but if they have done exceptionally well, where you feel they need to be appreciated over and above saying “thank you” after a hard day, do feel free to tip them. You can tip between $10 and $40, depending on the work load per person. When you decide to tip in cash, make sure to give each crew member their tip individually as opposed to giving it to the foreman to pass it on to his crew. They will feel recognized and appreciated for the effort they put in individually.
If the job was heavier than most, for example carrying your items up or down several flights of stairs, negotiating narrow passageways, moving heavy and sensitive furniture or unusual items, then it is only fair to tip the crew. On the whole, you should tip according to the job performance and the attitude displayed by the crew towards you, your family members and above all how they handled your property.
Be Courteous and Pull Your Weight
As much as you are paying the company to move your things, showing a little common courtesy and being helpful to the crew does not hurt. It will take the edge off an already difficult job and give the crew some motivation to work well and go the extra mile on your behalf. Offer them some cool drinks if it is hot and a light lunch if they are working over lunch time. When they need permission to make an intrusion on the neighbor’s boundaries, seek it on their behalf. Go out of your way to keep your children or pets in check while they do their work. It helps them work much better without distractions.
Do Not Give Alcoholic Drinks
It is important to note that while you might indulge in an alcoholic beverage to quench your thirst while loading and unloading your stuff, the moving crew is actually at work and are not allowed to take alcohol while they move you. Be mindful of their welfare and offer them soft drinks and or ice cold water instead. You should also keep to soft drinks so as not to tempt any of the crew to take the alcohol and violate their work ethics.
The biggest compliment you can pay a moving company is to recommend them to others who need to move if you liked their service. The saying is common in the service industries that if you liked the service offered, tell others but if you did not, tell them so that they can rectify their weak areas.
